I am considering purchasing a 4 cassette tape set put out by Bas Rutten which is focused on conditioning. I presently work out in the Dojo twice a week and get a good workout but I need to supplement my cardiovascular conditioning. Apparently there are boxing, muay thai, MMA and a 4th workout routine. Has anyone used these. Is it worth the $60. Up to this point I have been doing wts for strength training and have been jogging for CV training. Thanks.

I don't have these but have been interested for a while.
I've been putting it off because its been said (by Bas himself at times) that they will be on CD soon.
I can't help myself, and have a lot of cardio/conditioning instructionals.
The best one I've found so far is Tony Cecchine's Lucky 13.
Its brutal and worth the money.
They have a cheap audio CD cut down version for only $20!
I don't have cause I'd already bought the DVD....

I've got the Bas tapes and use them a lot for cardio when training for NHB. I also know an Muay Thai instructor who uses them pretty consistently for his class. They are definitely good... but I don't know about 60$ good. I'd say dollar for dollar they'd be a better investment than a treadmill or anything of that nature, if you want to put it into that kind of perspective.
I wouldn't look to Bas for weight training in these tapes. He doesn't do a very good job of emphasizing supporting muscle groups. When building strength for punching, it's important to excersize your rotator cuffs in addition to your pecs and tris to avoid injury.
As far as the cardio goes, Bas' way is probably the best way to do it. But you could make a reasonable facsimile for yourself. Which may even be better because it would be customized to your goals.
I'd probably make a 28 minute or so tape that consists of instructions like:
"Right jab, left cross, left knee"
"Right kick, right jab"
"10 Push ups"
I'd also try to make it so difficult that you gas at the 16 minute mark... and then try to work yourself up to the 28.

I've used them because they are in my Gym. They are really cool and great for open gym day when there isn't any specific instruction. But would I buy them? not sure.

Sounds like a reasable idea then. When I train on my own it helps have to something motivate my lazy butt. The E-bay suggestion is a good one. Thanks.

Yeah yeah yeah old thread. But I thought this was better than starting a new thread on a done-topic.
I just thought I would add to this that after a three week vacation from martial arts, (family reunion all the way across the country)
I went back to Ju-Jitsu, when I had left our warm ups were like three three minute stretchs of Bas's work outs, our instructor was building up.
When I came back we were doing the full 28 minute first track.
I did it coming from three weeks of nothing, and I must say.
It kicked the **** out of me, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to work cardio, my instructor uses both of 28 minute tracks when he is working out, and wants to build us up to that.
Seriously though, it is excellent cardio workout.
I felt like I was going to vomit around minute 15 or so and I don't even know how I pulled it out of me, but I managed to keep going. At the very end I felt like I was just going to fucking collapse.
Very good buy for anyone interested.

I use Bas' tape with my boxing team. There are two problems for a class setting.
1.) Bas doesn't say "lead jab, cross", he says, "left jab, right straight". The problem? Some of the boxers are unorthodox. They have to remember to reverse his instructions.
2.) Only more advanced boxers can follow his routine because he talks very fast. Not recommended for people who cannot move quickly.
I just love all the odd-ball comments he puts on the tape. "If you are not tired, jump up and touch your knees to your chest. You will become tired."
