The sleeve was the starting position from which I was taught the sweep, so that's really just how I think about the move when I go through it in my head. The sleeves are for control while you are waiting for the right time to get the underhooks. You need to remove the knee in order to sit up.

As for x-guard, I just don't use it, and it's pretty hard to get on a guy who's on his knees wouldn't you say? Nobody around here uses x-guard anyway. Come to think of it, I don't think I've every seen anyone use that guard in Sweden.

And of course there is the distincs posibility that my description is completely incomprehensible to anyone but me...
I pointed at him [the panhandler], bringing my rear hand up in a subtle approximation of the double Wu Sau guard that is the default hand position in Wing Chun Kung Fu.

    "Step away," I hissed.

That's the way I read it.

Sweeps mostly. Lots and lots of sweeps.

Me too. But Villian says it is something different called "pinch half-guard". I completely forgot to ask my instructor about it yesterday.

I'll have to remember for Monday's class.

Right. I know this. You corrected me, and then I said this...

Anyone got pics or vid of the progression/sweeps Villian is reffering to? I'll have to start working from it and see.
and then you responded with this...

and I took that to mean that my description of "outside knee across the hips, ala, scissor sweep style" was incorrect.

Which is why I was confused.

What is the image I should have then if the "outside knee across the hip" is correct?

You were right; my visual was wrong.

I asked one of the purples at my gym if he knew what the "pinch half-guard" was. He said he wasn't sure and asked me to show him what I meant. As I started to position into half guard with the scissor knee across the body he said "OH YEAH!! but I call it the butterfly half-guard, and the positioning for the bottom leg is here." He then proceeded to sweep the hell out of me with it. Cool.

Thats were my visual was wrong the hooking of the bottom leg and the foot. I got it now. Thanks.

Random comment aside from the love-fest: If you're not having much luck sweeping from "pinch," you can transition fairly easily from "pinch" half guard to quarter guard (This comment assumes that you can't sweep because your opponent is good, so if you can't sweep because you suck, you probably can't make it to quarter guard, either). Even if you don't like quarter guard much, it's an option that makes it easier to transition back to some other variety of open guard that you do like, or even back to closed guard.
