Actually, I know Sensei Hobbs personally. (He attended my wedding - is that personal enough?) He was my husband's Sensei for Shorin-Ryu Karate as well as Aiki Ju-Jutsu. He is NOT the guy from "The Natural." TOTALLY different person. (Google him to see vids of him performing katas.)
I am quite positive that he would NEVER certify someone he didn't absolutely feel deserved certification.
Sensei Hobbs (former Col in the USAF) keeps in touch with my husband and I on a fairly regular basis (even though my husband's martial arts career has gone down the toilet with his commissioning in the Marine Corps). He's one heck of a straight-shooter, and as you well know, one very accomplished individual. He has dojos all over. My husband studied with one of his students in the Queen's University Belfast Karate Club when he was studying abroad. His students have a way of running into each other in the oddest places. LOL!

i know sensei hobbs, personally. he is my juijutsu sensei. i can tell you he would never certify someone unless he felt they truly deserved it.
and he is not the same guy as the guy from natural. they just have the same name, that is all.
