Of course, when they allowed all that stuff, they weren't as good at punching. I wouldn't mind if the Queensbury rules had limited it only to bare knuckles and some stand-up grappling, (i.e., no putting a dude in a headlock and wailing away like a schoolyard bully) but que sera sera.

boxers do grapple liek hell still, a lot of the time at least (obviously it's broken up.)
But it's true - they are much better at punching now because of the rules (rules really do make a difference!) They're easily the best punchers in the world - teach them some grappling, possibly some kickboxing and you get the world's best MMAists and hand-to-hand Street Fighters.

I covered this before. That is why I slam the BJJ nutriders for thinking the Gracies evented something new. MMA is just coming around again like it has for centuries.Boxing back then allowed for submission, kicks, and kicking when down.
My, doesn't that sound like NHB of today. Full circle, I say.
Comments?
BTW There was no ground fighting in early boxing. Standing grappling was allowed and some wrestling but not full ground work since Boxing was comepeting against Wrestling as a popular sport.

"Boxers are no doubt, the best punchers in the world. You're right originally boxing was very "open" and not limited like today. If John L. Sullivan were fighting today, he'd no doubt be in MMA and not boxing."
Ever see really old footage? JUST BRUTAL! The ref would push the one guy who knocked the other away for a bit to stand up the fallen guy. Before the fallen guy barely got to his feet he was being smashed and pummeled as hard as the other guy could dish them out! Standing 8-count? WTF is that all about?
