I prefer to wear knee-pads during clinch training. Not for the sake of easing the impact on my partner, but to reduce some of the sharpness of knee-on-knee clacks that can happen during mirror knees. They have absolutely no impact on training methods. To answer the original question, I use volleyball pads fairly effectively, but have no idea regarding wrestling pads. The one problem with the VB pads is they can shift if not taped down.
