I'd like to add...unless your opponent opens himself up for a haymaker.
It's been awhile since I've read the pamphlet but I think he explains the dangers of ever using the haymaker, otherwise known as a suckerpunch, because you have to be a sucker to use it. Maybe the guy is drawing you in to throw a haymaker only to land a straight to your face. You have to always assume the guy is better than you and use the most effective arsenal/techniques.

I don't think Dempsey's Bullshido, I do think there are somethings that may not have withstood the test of time in his idea of self-defense, i.e. doesn't take into account the use of more kicks and knees used by people today. Or, that someone's friend may jump in from behind.

However, he does a great job of justifying when to use a straight punch, and he also writes about the proper times to do a wrist snap. People just take one thing and run with it without knowing the full reasoning behind the technique.

He also talks about the dangers of hitting on the forehead with a fist. He wasn't stupid, he fought many bare-knuckle fights and I'd take a lot of what he says to stock--may not win an amateur boxing match but I bet you could be a great brawler.

The other fun thing about Dempsey's book is that I recall his diet for a fighter as being pretty sparse--especially for a 190 pounder. And, he says he doesn't necessarily think smoking is horrible, just know that he never smoked while winning championships.

Dempsey co-wrote How to Fight Tough with wrestler Bernard Cosneck. He taught the Coast Guard during WWII.
