Vertical fists are used sometiems in boxing and MMA. They;re just not as effect as getting that twist on the wrist in there.

By vertical punch, do you mean that your fist is vertical. If you do, I doubt it is AS effective as a twisting punch.

Hold your fist out vertical. It feels a bit unnatural.

My fist naturally falls into a diagonal (almost 45 degree) position. That's how I punch if I'm not twisting my fist.

Nothing is more stimulating than the ejaculation of...uh....knowledge...yeah, that's the ticket!

Vertical fist was used by boxers when they didnt have gloves(bare knuckle fighters) .Also i have seen pictures of pankration fighters use vertical fist when punching!!!

The vertical fist is used to minimize damage to the fist.

Personally, I wouldn't make a fist at all if I had to fight in a bareknuckle situation (read: self-defense). I don't have the conditioning, nor the absolute bat **** delirium it would take to try to break my hand. Palm strikes and hammerfists would be preferred over a fist strike. Of course, elbows and knees go without saying.

By that I mean knuckles, mostly.

Sadly no one has really thanked Ninja for sharing this info. Well, its very much appreciated here as this information is hard (and expensive) to come by. If you have more to share on his punching mechanics they would be much appreciated!

Just to let you know he was a heavyweight champion some consider him as one of the greats!!!

Dempsey was one of the greatest pure punchers in the history of boxing. In the older styles of boxing alignment was a big issue and they did a lot of prappling. When Dempsey was champ the style had already changed quite a bit though.

Did you actually search the site? I posted Jack Dempsey's entire book in .pdf form for download.
