Foot up or down when kicking?

I've received different advice on foot position while kicking with the shin. From one instructor, I was told to keep my foot relaxed while kicking to prevent running into the elbows on a roundhouse to the body. Also, I was told to point the foot downward to make the shinbone stick out more.

Another told me to kick as if I was putting on the boot with the toes pointed upward, so that the muscle running up the anterior calf would flex, preventing injury.

So, which way do you kick, and any particular reason why?

both pointing straight down or straight up are good, if you keep it too relaxed it's going to hurt more when you kick something hard. Pointing your foot up is good for cut kicks and other sweeping kicks where you want to hook the leg.

edit: though of course pointing your foot up is obviously more likely to hurt your toes

what she said, i dont think it particularly matters one way or the other but i prefer having my toes sticking out. nothing like jamming your toes on the inside of someones knee :/

You may want to slap the person that told you this considering the bone is wedged between your knee and ankle structures. It's static. IT's not going anywhere.

You want to keep your foot a little tense. Don't **** a brick doing it or it will detract from your technique.

I'd suggest keeping the foot straight out. If you miss or they move you may be able to hit with the flat of your foot. If they move and you have your toes sticking out, you cant walk.

the only thing that sticks out more if you do that is your tib anterior muscle and the effect that has either way is negligible.
