Like all motor skills catching kicks requires practice. I find it's safer if you move into your opponent so you can send him crashing to the ground( by either kicking the supporting leg or simply shoving him). Also if you have a good hold of the leg(closer to the foot) you can pull it up and quickly step back( that can give your opponent a nasty groin pull.
