    How to make a bokken

    http://www.instructables.com/id/EMVO...6GNG/?ALLSTEPS

The above tutorial isn't bad if you have some woodworking experience, though i wonder how well using an existing bokken in step 4 would work.

Of course it would be easier to just buy one for 15 bucks.

On a vaguely related note, has anyone tried one of those plastic bokken that Cold Steel makes these days?

I made one out of a broken hockey stick once. They break, but they're free. And in canada, broken hockey sticks are everywhere!

Just take a bo, and give it goofy blond hair and a red Gi and have it yell "Shoooryuken!" all the time.

This guy knows what he is doing, though soaking or steaming the wood before the bending would make it easier and you can wipe the excess glue off with a damp cloth before it hardens instead of scraping it. For purely asthetic reasons I would also suggest oiling the wood instead of coating it (though it will need to be re-oiled once or twice a year)
Another good wood would be Ipe which is another South American wood and sometimes called ironwood, it is rather heavy but it is strong, hard and impact resistant.
