Stephen R Donaldson on MA bullshido
Some of you may or may not know who he is but IMO he is the best fantasy writer after Tolkein and the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are right up there for me right after LOTR as the greates Fabtasy books ever.
Anyways he's also a martial artist and I was reading his comments on his website where I came across this nugget
"Funakoshi wrote, "The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." Well, that's certainly an attractive notion. But after a few years in the martial arts, I couldn't help noticing that some martial artists spend decade after decade becoming lousier and lousier human beings. In those cases, the study of the martial arts hasn't produced perfection of character: it has merely exposed the underlying meanness and brutality of the student. Ergo, the study of the martial arts does not *inherently* lead to perfection of character. Therefore being a True Believer in the martial arts is--if I may say so--misguided. As is (just to pick a random example) being a True Believer in Jihadism."
He's a very wise man.
Just thought I would share

Good observation! One for which there is a lot of evidence on these pages.

I agree. SRD is a good writer and MA's don't inherently lead to perfection of character. As much as I wish it was true, like alcohol, it sometimes just enhances one's idiocy and unqualified ego. <cough>C o d a</cough>

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris
