My Son vs. Black Belt Magazine

My son is a discerning little chap. He regularly detroys the business and motoring sections of our newspaper, but leaves the news and opinion sections untouched. I know, I know - so narrow. But I digress...

Today, he destroyed a new publication: Black Belt.

Now, he's too young to speak, so he can't quite explain why he's chosen to ratshit this issue.

Tell me, what does this say about the latest edition of Black Belt? Is he objecting to the hapkido focus, the internal energy advertisement, or the Bruce Lee special? Has he just become fed up with actors big-noting themselves?

    Discuss.

    Kids are very smart.

I have learned a lot about stick fighting from having my 4 year old come running at me with a stick because he's really trying to swing the stick through, thinking I'm invincible, where as I have to be careful not to do anything that might hurt him.

I also do some basic kickboxing training with him - glove and pad drills. And he also knows how to do a tomoe nagae and a juju gatame (arm bar). Its good being a dad!

    Judo: essential parenting training.

Yes, kids think they can't hurt you. Makes me glad I have a reach advantage, because they certainly have more will to destruction.

It's funny, actually - just this afternoon I was suggesting to my wife that our son should go to Judo when he's old enough. By the time he's my age, he'll be flexible, fit and skilled enough to avoid my idiotic injury.

Has there ever been an issue of Black Belt Magazine WITHOUT a Bruce Lee special?

Your son was obviously defending himself from the vicious attack from the paper dragon on the cover.

I've learnt to use my meagre submission grappling skills on my son when changing nappies. He has a pretty good guard for a four month old.

Damn right. Side guard and arm locks are essential. Just wait until he starts trying to stand up in the middle of it, CroCop style.

lol - at the moment standing up in the middle of it is the least of my worries. Some of the 'dirty' tactics he uses to escape my dominant position....well let's just say that kind of thing could revolutionise MMA, if the crowd had the stomach for it.
