Yes, this is true. Accidents still can happen.

The thing is Uchi-Mata still has the mechanics of a hip throw. You have to pull your opponant onto you, have complete body contact from your shoulder all the way down to your backside, have your hips low and in. Then as you pull your opponant onto you and lift with the hips you reap their inner thigh with your leg.

My original point was too many people just rely on the "leg lift" action.

Granted, but if we take another hip throw - let's say O-goshi for arguments sake - the potential for injury is much less. With a resisting opponent, things can and do go wrong. With O-goshi, what happens when it goes wrong? With uchi-mata (especially a beginner trying it in randori), it's easy to see what goes wrong. The proof is in this thread, and also from looking around your club when beginners try it.

I agree 100% that Uchi-mata should have the mechanics of a hip throw. However, it's very rarely used that way by lower grades. It's a very powerful throw as can be seen in all major tournaments. Ever seen Yoshida use it at the Olympics? It's damned impressive.

Again, agreed. This, however is the reason why there are accidents IMO.

Crazy story. I have noted no one is asking for proof in the form of pictures or video yet.
