While it was a tributary state to China at several points in time in it's history (meaning they paid China so as not to have China invade), Korea has on several occasions kicked out the Japanese, the Chinese, and the Mongols.

There was actually a large segment of Korean American immigrants during this time attempting to bring the plight of the Korean people to the public eye, and of course, failing. It's a little known fact that there were guerilla training camps for Korean Americans who wished to work for the liberation of their home country. -

Huh, well, learn somethin' new every day.
Like the battle in Alaska during WWII or that the Great White Fleet tried to keep the Bolsheviks from winning their war against the rest of Russia.
It's also kind of amusing Japan and Korea's attitudes to each other since in it's early history Japan invited MANY Koreans and Chinese to live there because they had a writting system and could teach the Japanese writting and religion (correct me if i'm wrong on that account)
