What with super fun TKD birthday parties and no pictures of any sparring. I'm gonna say avoid it. Judging the school by the website it seems like mcdojang.

Chuan, in the time it took you to tell him to search you could have said something mean about Hapkido, like, 20 times. Seriously. Get on the ball.

Emerald, Hapkido sucks. I'm sure there's somebody out there teaching people to fight and calling it Hapkido, but if so, I doubt they're doing the compliant one-steps and ridiculous spinny-flippy-secret-handshake-wristlocks of doom we studied.

    Hapkido bad.

My high school didn't have a wrestling team. I wish it had. Getting schooled by tiny little scrawny wrestlers is what got me thinking that I should learn how to grapple. In college my friend the 135-pounder tied my 240-pound football playing ass in knots without breaking a sweat.

When you say the OSA place did hard sparring, what does "sparring" mean?

I used to be exhausted at the end of WTF Olympic TKD sparring, too. That's fine, but it had nothing to do with fighting.

If they're doing point sparring--few or no hand techniques, tapping and flicking kicks, lunging in and out to get points by touching someone, turning their backs as a defense, total sideways stances. . . . . these things will not teach you to fight.

I tried. It was a waste. In the end I had to tell a man I liked and respected that I was leaving his school. I'd have been better off leaving it to people who wanted to go to tournaments and dream of the Olympics.

High school wrestling is an excellent base for any takedown or grappling oriented MA. Wrestlers tend to have very good base. In case you're not familiar with the concept of base, I'll explain. Wrestling teaches you to lower or focus your center of gravity to exert the most stabilizing or crushing force with your body that is possible. So when a wrestler is on top and trying to stay there, he will adjust his weight in a manner that facilitates a pin-you-to-the-ground type of control. Even if you thrash around, depending on weight and height variables, he can usually adjust his base to maintain control.

If you are standing against an experienced wrestler he will have a variety of takedowns and takedown counters in his arsenal. He will also know how to adjust his base (usually by lowering his center of gravity relative to his opponent) while standing to make it difficult for his opponent to manipulate his mass while standing.

What good is pinning someone to the ground after you take them down? To answer, I GnP'ed some guy's face from a rather sloppy mount in 1986 while I was still a high school wrestler. This was long before I was aware of BJJ. Seemed like the thing to do at the time. As an amusing aside, I found out later he was a black belt in Karate. Ironically if I had known that I would have been MUCH more intimidated by him and it's doubtful I would have had the cojones to stand up to him.

On a final note, I started BJJ in earnest at 32, about ten years after my last wrestling competition. Despite the ten year gap, I'd be lying if I said the base I acquired from wrestling didn't give me a fairly large advantage over the other beginners in BJJ.
Shut the hell up and train.

Omega would have told him that HE sucked.

But there would have been a flavor of poetry about it. And more cursing.

    Hwardo

Obviously, you did not give hwardo a chance, I have been studying with Master Kwon for 2 years and am extremely happy with what I have learned and the quality of the instruction.
