Hmm. I must admit, I'm skeptical about this myself. I do not know much about Aikido, but from what I've seen, I would not select it as my primary art for self-defense.
I'll say this...when you chase your opponent around, you open yourself up to numerous things. I also find it hard to believe someone can grab ahold of my arm when I'm throwing a FULL SPEED jab or right hand. Unless you have a bad habit of leaving your arm hanging around, almost no one should be able to do this to you.
I would have to experience it myself, but I dont believe an Aikido artist could really do *any* of that stuff I've seen to me in a flat out fight. -

You've taken an extremely defensive stance...for what? No one was bashing aikido. All we were saying is that we found it highly unlikely that someone who has practiced an external Chinese MA for 15 years could not even hit a 6th dan aikidoka

From the original post.As I tried to "blast in" to punch him, he would just start turning (I think they call it Tenkan) and suddendly would grab my arm and put me on a lock.

deus ex just clarified it for me. Also...
The demonstrations of Aikido I've seen have sometimes involved the practioner "catching" a punch and using some type of wrist lock or throw.
I admit I have not seen much in the way of Aikido, so perhaps what I have seen was not realistic. At any rate, that is why I said that.

Well Mike, I'm not one to bash. My firm belief is you can learn something from everything. I'm not a little teen or whatever you said but I'd never let that happen to me.

On that note I'd have to say that you would definitely have to suck if you had a sixth dan do that to you everytime. Either that or he just had your number. Fifteen years in the martial arts it doesn't seemed you learn much.
Go away I'm talking to myself -
