The counter to a number 1 (assuming its the same in Latosa and Kali. Straight strike 12 o'clock to 6 down the centre aimed at the centre line) is called a roof block. Although its techniqually not a block, as you off line keeping the stick high, it will go through your opponents stick and strike him in the face. That strike should be surpressed/controlled.

It hit you because the person blocking didn't have control of the weapon. Another thing that happens often is the person "blocking" isn't holding his stick right or backing it up with the live hand, so if he moves incorrectly the stick collapses under the strike and his own weapon slams into his head.

I hit myself in the nuts while messing around with the staff once. Last time I'll do a Jet Li impression, <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

there is a difference between an uncoordinated person punching at your head and an uncoordinated person swinging a rattan stick at your head
Yes. The uncoordinated person with the stick will probably hit himself.

Thank you Mr. escrima9, we all know these things, but you have to learn them the hard way I guess...

Like, why you keep your hands close to your body when you're not attacking. (because otherwise the attacker tagets them 1st & yous own blocked strikes can be reclected to them)

AND, unsuprisingly, if you **** up anything, you can get hurt... except in Kali/Escrima/Arnis it might also be the nearby wall/cactus/lamp/cat/person standing behind you/ your master (undefeated in death matches)...

"we were doing the inside counter to strike one (both VERY VERY new to escrima)...and i was attacking....while my partner was going through the counter he somehow hit me in the head...i play it over and over in my mind...i can't figure out how his stick got me."

angle and timing is how it happened.

REAL escrima, targeting the body instead of the stick. striking sticks (ala sinwalli) is just a drill.

in my art, clacking sticks is frowned upon. counters are designed to hit the opponent, NOT his weapon.

a good counter angle will neutralize the attack while simoultaneously striking the opponent.

    peace.
