I bought a book about Taijiquan legend and philosophy, and another one of the aplications of techniques. I think they're good.

    The thing is:
If you're NOT a guy that wants to spend all his life trying to know one technique perfectly and being unbeatable, you won't study Taijiquan.
Is too damm long, as well as aikido. You have to be a 30 years long practicioner with only that and harvesting raise on your mind.

If you like the art, is cool because it has great background and philosohpy.
If you wanna JUST kick ass, you should stick with the easy but usefull stuff like box, thaibox or full contact with some wrestling.

    Peace

I'm one of the internal arts apologists around here but I still don't see why you need to specifically not try a little MT or BJJ just to prove a point. I'm training MT right now and it's awsome. In a couple months when I get back to China, I'll go back to Baji and Bagua. It's all just hitting people. Just look for people who can fight. Taji will either rise to the challenge or die out on it's own merits. Reputation means nothing.

Sometimes some IMA guy will do well at an MMA tournament and then everyone will say that wasn't taiji or "oh, well he cross-trained in 'X'". . . **** 'em. If they want to think that way, let them. Only the fighter really knows what he trained and how each part of his training influenced his style.

Mas Oyama the best fighter of all time went around and challenged different styles to prove that his is best which is of course Kyokushin Kai. The only match he ever lost was against a Tai Chi master. After he lost the match he stayed with the master for a couple of months and in this time the Master taught him Tai Chi. At the end of the stay with the Master, he adapted his fighting style and he took on all the Thai Chi master best fighter and he defeated all of them.

I am getting rid of the flaky postures and adapting tai chi principles to realistic attacks.
I think where you have gone wrong is your interpretation. These 'flaky postures' are all part of tai chi principles, the chi implications of which cannot be ignored. Everything has a message or instruction, effect or implication.

It's only as realistic as how you choose to apply it. Most are happy to focus slowly on concentrating towards perfection of technique, but who's to say how you might choose to apply your technique in combat?

Basically if you want something that will bluntly train you motor action and what works, practice a different art. Tai Chi's lessons are more subtle and less easy to realise.

The usual stuff again - if you are a blundering dunderhead just looking to bust some ass stick with something primitive like boxing. If you are a more elevated person looking for a way to look and sound cool do tai chi. Oh, and if it doesn't work it's your fault.
