jamoke is correct in his remarks.
if you are not careful with step advance kicking, the sweep he is talking about could cause serious damage to your pelvic area.
my input:
a basic front kick chamber format contains four potential attacks.
it is quite realistic to expect any competent kicker to have at least two attack points in any given kick.
a good two point front kick has the 'axe heel' or 'drop stomp'. the leg coming up delivers the front kick and the leg dropping delivers the axe or stomp. the axe doesnt advance, and the stomp does.
relating to the sweep attack. the drop stomp is vulnerable to the sweep, but the axe heel will not be and is a potential counter strike( to the lower leg or ankle).
peace.

Os, i think our classification systems are different.
true many of the those kicks utilize the same chamber, but i was referring to the standard front kick.
like this:
raising the knee is a knee strike
extending the lower leg is a front kick
snapping the kick back to chamber is a heel snap, used to counter or attack in some situations.
setting the kick down has several options:
1)back sweep
2)vertical stomp
3)re-kick,usually at a lower level than the original kick, if the first kick is to the bladder than the second kick would be to the knee or lower.
not saying you are wrong, just i was thinking differently about it.
peace.

don't you think that is a bit much for a self-defense program? i think people have lost sight of the thread...for basic street level defense, you probably don't have to worry too much about sweeps and what kind of kick you need to hit your opponent with...you just need to hit them

Not to negate anything any of you have said, but I thinks a major factor has been mostly overlooked.
A person who is being attacked needs to really know how to unleash on their attacker. I call it fighting spirit. Part of this ability, I think, comes from having really considered what it is like to be brutalized.
It is like that old saying, "If you don't think you can pull the trigger, don't carry the gun." It is the same with combat, all of the techniques in the world aren't crap if you don't have the will to injure or maybe even kill your opponent.
Fighting Spirit is 90% of the battle. If you don't have it, you ain't **** -- regardless of what style you practice. -
