well i forgot about side kick...for that you have to chamber because for that kick it IS necessary in order to perform the kick....
My hands are always up...some people in my schools just know how to bum rush a kick. We train to take kicks and move in...i'm just not as good as some so i can't take advantage of kicks that way. But i kick pretty fast and hard.may be because your hands were down, or simply because you have no clue how to block.

i prefer low and mid-kicks which allow me to land on the kicking foot and advance. When i drop the leg (even after chambering) back to sholder length or back (fighting stance) there seems to be too much lag time, even if i am simultaneously thrwoing a punch

Look, if your hands were UP you would not be getting HIT. how many different ways of putting it to you are there?? Reasons for getting hit. REASON NUMBER ONE (1) You do not know how to block correctly, your arms are most likely flapping in the wind and you most likely are air born from flapping them around..................WORK ON YOUR DEFENSIVE SKILLS.

i didn't say i was getting hit in the face or body. Someone can trap your hands...nobody can counter everything. And, kicking high can leave you open for a myriad of attacks.

ok here it is:
My problem with saying that you always chamber and that it is an absolute necessity is that there are many circumstances in which either in the beginning or ending of the kick, chambering could be more dangerous than good. Hence it is not a necessity. As a result it is good to have a set of kicks which do not require chambering (krav front groin, MT round house and low kick, etc). When i try to chamber a front kick there is too much predictability if you ALWAYS chamber it. My opponents realize i am going to chamber. As my leg goes back they can follow it. Now i am in too close to shoot the leg back out and they can shoot in (where i may or may not be able to sprawl, knee, strike) or they can trap one hand and enter with a hook. I am not saying i get hit every single time. But i have seen plenty MT style fighters take down more karate/kungfu type kicks.
Of course i need to work on my defensive training, and my offensive too. But that does not change the mechanics of the human body.
