Yeah Sikhism is fairly new. The Nihangs would say otherwise, but I believe the Sikhs learned Shastar Vidiya from the Kshatriya Rajput Hindus. I believe Kalaripayyat etc. were offshoots of SV, not that it's the best style or anything.

sikhism is a not as old as islam and hinduism.Martial arts existed in india before sikhism eg kalaripayyat wrestling sword/spear etc

anyway the oldest evidence of martial arts i have seen is in the pyramids of egypt(tomb of Beni Hasan)-hyroglyphics show men wresling kicking punching and stickfighting etc

Daninja- I have heard and seen a little bit on Indian wrstling but not a whole lot. If I understand correctly many of the wrestlers hold Hanuman (Hindu monkey face looking God) in high honour and worship. Its really interesting stuff.

Escrima9 I dont think theres any one origin for the martial arts per say. It evolove in different places during different periods throughout history independently from one another. It is amazing when you come across stone carvings, statues, old books etc. on ancient systems of fighting I would add.
