Sorry for the confusion guys. Someone posted before miguksaram, but the admins must've removed the post. My comment was intended for that post, not miguksaram's.

Where and when did you see these Sikhs demonstrating, and what were they performing? There's a bootleg Sikh martial art out there called Gatka, and it's pure Bullshido, and it's usually what most people see. You can learn more about it on the site...

P.S. Feel free to ask me questions guys, but make sure you read the site first to find your answers. I'm interested to see what you guys think of the martial art. I personally don't think it's Bullshido, but I want to hear your opinions.

I've seen a group of Sikhs demonstrating their martial art. Those guys are badass.

Man, that "immature" comment came from nowhere. Migu's probably more mature than most of us here.

You think this guy will ever be back?

    More information on the Nihangs:

Were these people considered the warrior class of India? Were you born into it like the Samurai were born into their rolls?

    BIGBANG,

Ok perhaps I missed it, but I didn't see where it said if people were inducted into warriorship or if they were born into it. Could you help a brother out? :)

You are born into the warrior caste.

Sikh are not the warrior caste per se, but are considered very loyal, so they were often (body)guards and soldiers. Even today they are considered loyal, but one bodyguard actually killed a prime minister...

There are several indian martial arts.

ok, now let me take a look at that site...

    Kuroneko,

If they were not the warrior caste, then who was and why were they considered for such honor (for better use of words) than the warrior caste themselves?

Sikhism is more a religion than a caste. It's a mix of Hinduism and Islam. When the persian moghuls were ruling northern india, some of them persecuted any non-muslim, so a guru at that time decided to make his followers a community of fighters. It's where the popular surname of singh (lion) came from. They called the boys 'singh' and the girls 'kaur' (princess).

Some sikh were also Rajput. Rajput is the famous warrior caste in north india. there are other warrior castes. don't ask me their names...

From their militant tradition and also their emphasis on community service, the sikh even today serve in police and armed forces.

I don't have a whole story. Only bits and pieces from whenever my wife (she's rajput) tells me something.

Sikhism does not believe in caste - anyone can become a warrior. I don't know about the "loyalty," but don't get me started on Operation Blue Star and Indra Gandhi. Most of the indian martial arts are bastardized versions of Shastar Vidiya (even the Shaolin arts).

You are born into the warrior caste.

Sikh are not the warrior caste per se, but are considered very loyal, so they were often (body)guards and soldiers. Even today they are considered loyal, but one bodyguard actually killed a prime minister...
