    Homeland Security Gets Taekwondo Lesson

    Bridges- Ethnic Media Digest

    Jun 13, 2003

Homeland Security officers are among a group of Southern California's Finest, who are being trained in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo to better defend their jurisdictions, reports the Korea Times Los Angeles edition. Approximately 65 law enforcement officers from Los Angeles and Orange counties, including two from the Department of Homeland Security, are learning how to contain a suspect in 5 seconds using Taekwondo.

“It decreases civil liability as we can defend without excessive force,” said Officer William Montalvo of Brea Police Department. Officials said that more officers would receive training in the future. Yong Ju Im, who worked at the security office of former South Korean President Kim Dae Jung, is conducting the trainings at an Orange County martial arts studio. He says the brand of Taekwondo he teaches, called "ultimate martial arts," was developed by the military and police in South Korea and stresses eliminating unnecessary movements in defense.
