I agree that it's hard to kick the knee when a roudhouse is being thrown from close range, but another option would be to move in on your opponent at that point.

Just don't let it hit you, MT people have some serious leg power :)

plow them in, bodycheck, shoot in
    :)

"Also about round house, kicking them in knee is extremely difficult because they usually try to do it from as close as possible. That is why they raise their shin to block the kick. You shouldn't try that with experienced MT guy unless you conditioned your shin VERY well. "
what about smashing your skin into their area above the knee?

of course you must worry about your hands as well

I think if I would have been used to those 16oz gloves and all the crap that comes with that, I would have been better off.

It really threw me off that I couldn't punch as fast or well-placed as I can at TKD practice, where we have much smaller gloves. You barely even notice them around your fist, as opposed to those 16oz monstrosities.

Well, to get back on the topic of the post. I would say that there could be several reasons of why you encountered a bad attitude at that school. But I would say simply that just like any other art, (and you can tell from the posts here) that the persons you encountered were just some bad apples. I imagine that these guys you ran into would consider themselves fighters and not martial artists especialy since you stated that they compete. As an instructor myself I know that I teach respect, and my students are respectful towards others.

Point fighting is like grinding. The movements are all right, but you just get a mess in your pants after you're done.

Raise your knee and point it at their leg.

In other words, block with your knee.
