I definately agree that you should do some shopping around before you decide on a new dojo to settle in... it only makes good sense, if you just walk in, sign a contract and jump into a class you are just begging to get fleeced.

A sign I look for is if the Instructor teaches... or tells. There is a HUGE difference. I am the kind of person that asks "Why?" and "Because I say so." is NOT an appropriate answer.

I never realized that until I started BJJ again. If my instructor sees you doing a technique incorrectly, he demonstrates the correct way to do it and says something like, "This is the way I do it, so that I don't have to go around the arm." Instead of just saying it is wrong, he tells you to try it the way you were doing it, then try it his way and see which one is better. Of course, I can't think of a time where mine was . . .

When you ask how long they have been doing it and where they trained who with etc they reframe from answering.

They know three submissions want a huge fee.

they tell you mixed martial arts has over 32 belts and you need to pay for each one of them (50dollars)
