Hell yeah! Hell no!
i'm considering enrolling in a self-defense course, but i'm not sure which is best. my primary objective is to be able to defend myself effectively in hand-to-hand situations and to be able to subdue/control attacker.

at this point i'm leaning towards a cross training in BJJ and Boxing. JKD and Krav Maga are also options i'm considering.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

BJJ and boxing is an EXCELLENT choice. Good JKD and Krav Maga will also be a good choice.

However I would personally recommend this:

Trainign in some MMA (Submission Fighting) as well as some BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai AND wrestling (freestle etc) if possible, including submission. wrestling.

You may want to train in a system which does it all, and sepeerately (so like BJJ + boxing, then a few times a week of Krav Maga/JKD, or submission fighting if there's a place near you.) A good submission fightign place will train aspects seperately, and then train everything to together to demonstarte to you how you can use the specialized MMA/submission fighting moves together, and why you shoudl concentrate on seperate aspects too.

self defence = awarness, guns/knifes and going around in groups (though that isnlt always a good idea.) ;) However you did say Hand-to Hand (although on the streets, you never know what's goign to happen.)

"Training = pain." - I said that.

**** Blade, he said self-defense, not sport fighting!!

*Gets flamed*

ok now that my opinion is out
:)

I have some other good advice.
Traing yourself physically. Do cardio/running/ swimming. Do pushups, crunchs, chin-ups, squats. Get weights or go to a gym if possible. You can make the best out of any art you take when you are in good physical condition, make that top physical condition.

"at this point i'm leaning towards a cross training in BJJ and Boxing."
have you research these arts?
have you considered their strenths/weaknesses?
both these are leave some GAPPING holes in your all around fighting techniques....hmm that didn't make much sense

"JKD and Krav Maga are also options i'm considering."
good options, apparently quality of these schools vary,
