Martial arts fan fends off attackers

A MARTIAL arts expert today spoke of his lucky escape when he was attacked by a gang of thugs. The 27-year-old van driver, who did not wish to be named, used his self-defence skills when he was assaulted while making deliveries in Govan. The Renfrewshire driver was stabbed in the back, punched and kicked during the unprovoked attack by four men who asked him for a lift. He was delivering a catalogue in Arklett Drive, in Drumoyne, early on Saturday when they approached him. The driver, who works for Reality, was treated for stab wounds in Glasgow's Southern General hospital. Detectives are treating the incident as attempted murder. They are keen to speak to the driver of a white van who drove past the incident but did not stop.

Today, the victim told how his background in Aikido, a Japanese form of self-defence, helped him to fend off his attackers. He said: "I don't think they expected to attack someone with a martial arts background and one even said I had put up a good scrap." After the attack, he went to make another delivery, not realising he had been stabbed until he saw blood on the seat. He then drove himself to hospital.

BlackBeltNow, don't worry about it. Kungfoolss posts are meaningless, just like his life.

Well, that's probably because in the streets, real knife attacks are not linear charges with the knife raised in an overhead manner as they are in a aikido dojo. There isn't much chance for the aikido stylist to BLEND with the assault if it's not telegraphed. :\

It sounds like his knowledge of Aikido is why he was only stabbed and NOT killed.

Perhaps, he only believed it was so. Adrenaline and fear does funny things to the mind, which is why 5 different people witnessing the same event, will often give 5 different accounts and with some details invented and/or imagined. The guy didn't even realize that he had been stabbed until he saw his blood spilling all over the inside of his van.

Like kungfoolss, I still think he wrongly thanked aikido. He probably didn't think about aikido until after the fight. Fact is people don't remember well their first time adrenaline rushing. I think he implanted wrongful memory in himself that aikido had work.
He thanked aikido w/o ever mentioend how aikido worked.

And when at a time you can't remember well such as adrenaline rush, or cuz ur too young, future thigns may influence ur "memory" of it. It is/was common that Psychotherapists were sued by parents, for helping kids "remember" that they were sexually abused as infants, when in reality they weren't. Same for adrenaline rush.
As he was trying to remember, the things that come into mind may influence the misinterpretation of what had happened.
