Alot of styles have been synthesized from other styles. Ishin Ryu is a combination of 3 styles. It would be hard to combine styles and find the rigt mix for a person who has never studed the art and there are going to be a ton of people who claim that there style is the best at everything. Did I mention that GoJu is the best style ever? Well it is! Go Jews!!

DJeter,
Damn.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - for ever."Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog -

"We already have BJJ and MAUY THAI nothing else is needed." nonononoooo you need wrestling too <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>, maybe a little boxing, and then specifically some submission grappling and Submission Fighting/NHB/MMA so you can train everything together.
"Wrestling is the Martial Art of America";
"If you don't know how to wrestle you don't know how to fight, that's the prerequisite to fighting" David Tank Abbott"Training = pain." - I said that.
PizDoff when drunk: "I'm actually MOST pissed that my target for the evening got drink...then I gave her my Bullshido Canada hoodie like a gentleman because she was outside with not much on...did I mention she barfed twice when I got our jackets...steaming barf is kinda fascinating..." - PizDoff. -

By JKD do you mean everyone having their own version? Yea, I think that is about right.
I am putting together a guide to self-training that people can use to suppliment their formal training if they want to ~ with a template art included included for those who just want to use that as their base and explore other arts. It has nothing to do with teenage knife issues so don't start bashing me all of you knife people.
Anyway, I think a lot of people on here could put together a book of the same kind. I'm still not sure if its a good idea or not. I'll have to see how it turns out and let you know. It's not going to be done anytime soon. I just started a new job a month ago and I'm also trying to get a comic book done to send in to Image Comics. I draw.
Some people would have to travel the world to get a good martial arts education. There are just TKD schools in some towns and that's it. You can wrestle in school, hope the coach is good. Go to camp in the summer. Maybe there is a good martial arts instructor in college. Honestly, I think that if you have good training partners and a good instructor in a base art though .. you can learn a lot from videos, books and friends.
Some people say you need a good instructor right there with you to learn but .. what if all the local instructors suck and then there is Royce Gracie on the video .. who is going to explain it better, Royce or Bob who took BJJ in college and runs a school out of his garrage?
We have a BJJ/JKD school here. I am going to get involved now that I am working even just for the competition and opportunities to make new friends. I'm sure I'll learn some stuff too. They also teach some FMA. -

IMHO the best way is just to let the other guy try to beat you any way they like - with striking or grappling - and to practice using whatever successful techniques you can to beat them. If they are better than you then get them to teach you some moves.
If you can't get it to work in sparring then don't bother with it; by sparring I mean allowing for the full range of combat: striking, clinch, and ground.
Oh yeah, sometimes you need to isolate specific ranges to train at, to ensure that you do train at all distances.
