This mostly is a question for judokas, but anyone's opinion is appreciated...

If you breakfall on concrete, do you "slap" the ground? I know that if you're simply running along and trip, you can roll out of it and keep running without losing a step. But what would you do if you were *thrown* on the street and they hold onto an arm? I guess hopefully I won't fight another judoka on the street, but still... my instructor said that if you slapped on concrete as hard as you're supposed to on the mat, there's a very good chance you'd break some fingers or the hand, but it's better than fucking up other parts of your body....

Say you're running along and you trip, you can do the forward roll (without the slap, of course, I'm not sure if all judo school's train this, it's really common in aikido though) and stand up as you roll over and then just keep running. I was really impressed when I first saw my friend do this (he did aikido for a while) while running.

Huh? You know the forward roll you do when you get hip thrown and then slap? You can do that without slapping and keep rolling OR roll into the standing position (granted they don't hold onto your arm, if you try that while they're holding onto your arm, it'll **** your legs up as they'll be cranked in wierd directions that're hard to explain on the net without pictures). But anyway I'm getting the impression I'm not explaining this right... I'll try to find some pictures of what I'm talking about.

I know what you are talking mikus. It's just that I don't run and do rolls for fun.

That's the one I was talking about, for those who aren't sure.

And I'm not really talking about for fun, just if you are running along and trip, it seems like a better option than just eating ****. But actually the friend who I saw do it did if sort of for fun I think. I turned around and saw him rolling for like 15 ft and then start running again. An odd sight, if you ask me.

Sadly enough, I do. It's called making ghetto fabulous homemade movies. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Arch your back right, and yes, you can roll on concrete. It'll feel just a tad painful at first, but it's quite possible. As for breakfalls on concrete, we always use a mat or cushion if somebody's gonna get slammed.
