I know judo uses guard, but i think in competition you're considered pinned if you are on your back for more than 30 seconds. So you have to get whatever sub you're going for as quickly as possible. Judo doesn't allow leg locks or foot locks. In judo you can win by pin and submission( there's probably some other ways to win, but i don't know alot about judo's rules)
I was told that in Sambo you're penalized for being on your back at all, in some competitions, which results in top focused game. You're allowed to use arm locks, leg locks, and foot locks. You can choke but not with the jacket. Sambo's throws are similar to judo and wrestling techniques.
BJJ, as was stated, is position before submission, but also allows alot of bottom work from the guard. Depepnding on what the competition rules are you may or may not be penalized for being on your back or jumping guard. As a result of this some peoples games can very from stressing top control to guard work depending on the competition rules. Arm locks, Chokes, and Leg locks(depending on competition rules) are allowed. BJJ players usually have a well balanced game.
Submission wrestling is no gi and can come from bjj, judo, and sambo. Alot of SW is no gi bjj, but it can be a mixture of other grappling styles.Last edited by Method2Madness; 7/12/2006 2:10pm at .

Guard is not considered a pin in judo. Nor is half-guard. You're pinned if you're in side control, mount, north south, scarf, etc. Then it's 25 seconds. You're right however in that you have to get your subs on quick, you get very little time on the ground in competitive judo.

You're a little confused here, you can win by pin but not if you're in guard or half guard. Pins in Judo are things like side control and mount, where the bottom man hasn't wrapped the top man with his legs. However, you're not pinned in back mount either, which means that giving up your back and trying not to get choked is a viable strategy, because you get stood up very fast if the action slows down. Essentially, in Judo you can fight from your guard, or you can opt out of newaza with a nice tight turtle.

Yeah I've seen alot of threads on the subject of BJJ vs. Judo, and it seemd to boil down to Position before submission, BJJ using the guard as an offensive position, Catch wrestling working on breeding sows, an ankle lock being the counter to a rear naked choke in catch wrestling. But I was lookin for something along the lines of what M2M posted. Sambo views the guard as blank, judo as blank.
