This conversation would be a lot better without the nerdy asides and cliched "read my post, DUMMY" flame-war staples.
Captain's Log: Just a little update for all my TRUE and HONEST friends out there:

    1) I am STRAIGHT! I am STRAIGHT! Get it through your thick skulls, numbskulls!

    2) My name is not Ian Brandon Something.

    3) Kacey is coming with me now. I have stolen her from the other Christian Weston Chandler.

You can learn how to drive a car by jumping behind the wheel, starting it up, and fiddling with the controls... but that doesn't mean it's something you should do, much less that you aren't likely to have to deal with consequences you wouldn't face under a real instructor.

That's the point. Almost everyone marginally interested in martial arts has wrestled around with their buddies. In a lot of cases, this is better training than what happens at many MA schools. It still doesn't mean it's anywhere remotely as effective as finding someone who knows what they're doing to teach you.

BJJ isn't available everywhere, but Judo and Wrestling are in North American AIUI. Find the local instructors.

I think it depends whether the crappling is entirely trial and error with very loose rules or whether you have somebody actively trying to train you who is telling you to do things wrong and perhaps enforcing it with weird rules.

The first method is how all legitimate MA was invented. As pointed out, it's just a huge waste of time if there is somebody available to teach who already knows how to do it. No martial art was really revealed by a spirit or delivered on a beam of light from a UFO. They built up over years of people just trying stuff out.

The latter method is why crappy point sparring-type training can actually make you worse by giving you weird habits that you actually worked to ingrain.

Dude, what other people do is their business, but being experienced it better to sit back and filter the bull. You might actually find somethings you can integrate or techniques you can "STEAL".

"Dude," let the thread die! For christ sake I've moved two provinces away, started school and have had two months of grappling experience since my last post in this thread!
