Do you still have the two sambo federations with the same names? Or did I imagine that?

Similiar if I remeber right:
American SAMBO Federation
American SAMBO Association.

We (the American Sambo Association) created the "Freestyle Sambo" rules in 2004 to bring back chokes and other types of submissions not permitted in sport sambo competitions. A few other rule changes as well. We wanted to appeal to an American grappling audience. Yes, jackets are a must. The rules have caught on and have created more intrest in sambo from other types of practitioners.
My understanding is that back in the mid 90's the now defunct World Sambo Federation was calling the no-gi stuff "Combat Sambo", not freestyle. I believe the American sambo Academy was as well. It was a bit of a mis-nomer in that no striking was allowed in those old "Combat Sambo" rules. Those rules never really stuck. But, as a result there are some folks out there claiming to be "Combat Sambo" champions - but have never entered a division with striking.

I've seen the ruleset for the ASA tournaments, and they actually look fun to compete under.
Edit: By the way Steve, feel free to post about grappling in DHS. We'd generally prefer you put grappling tournament announcements in the iCompete forum, but if you have any techniques you want to share, or even thoughts on techniques you want to share, we'd like to hear them. People from grappling arts other than BJJ have been afraid to post in there in the past, but we're trying to encourage more discussion from qualified practitioners of ALL quality grappling arts.
