As far as I know, there are three types of Sambo:
Combat Sambo = MMA with a jacket(kurtka), but I believe it also has a points system similar to other Sambo comps.
Freestyle Sambo = Submission Grappling with just a jacket(kurtka)
Sport Sambo = Basically Judo with leglocks instead of chokes, and not as many restrictive rules.
There's more to each, but that's the gist of it. -

I understand that Sambo allows grips that are considered unorthodox, and for which you can get penalized in judo :tard:

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris -
My pleasure.

You can't hold a grip that is not "normal" for more than 5 seconds. A "normal" grip when standing is basically you hold the right side of the opponent’s gi (ie. top of the shoulder, sleeve) with the left hand, and the left side of your opponent's gi with your right hand, and always above the belt.
Sambo allows for cross-hand grips and to grip from the belt without penalization while standing if I understand correctly. Sambo owns a lot of that from the folk wrestling styles that were part of its inception. You could do the same grips in judo comps, but you have 5 seconds to execute a throw or to change your grip to a normal grip... a moronic rule if you ask me :tard:Read this for flexibility and injury prevention, this, this and this for supplementation, this on grip conditioning, and this on staph.
