neither one, really. the point of rolling is to improve your game (and your partners'), whatever that entails. stop worrying about being "successful" and start focusing on applying and improving the techniques you've been shown--subs, passes, sweeps, whatever. don't keep score; you shouldn't care about who taps whom. making a conscious effort to apply the techniques you've learned that day is a good place to start.

Yeah I definatley do that. I usually try to do the last two techniques we learned because the one from that same night is pretty obvious. I guess I just have to stop feeling like I didn't accomplish anything if I get no taps.

Exactly. The first six months of bjj consist of you playing bongo drums and getting crushed positionally.
Then new guys show up and all the stuff you failed at works suddenly.

I'm pretty sure it is magic.

So lastnight in Gi class I didn't get any subs at all! Aren't you guys proud? :)

On the bright side I did get comfortable hanging out in a real half guard and defending the position by staying on my side!

WhiteShark, are you currently training in Shidokan or are you on hiatus while you train BJJ? Also, is the MMA style sparring in Shidokan in a gi?

ojgsxr6 - Hiatus. It depends. In Shidokan Tournaments the MMA part is No-Gi. In most of my classes the grappling was Gi which I always found odd. Sparring was rarely free-for-all MMA style. Usually Striking and grappling were trained seperatley and sometimes throws were added to either one. For example Stand-up striking with throws or Randori with unlimited groundwork.

Why in your fifth or sixth class are you even talking about half-guard and expressing any concern over it?

Half-guard should not be a goto part of your grappling at this point. Despite Omega's bs to the contrary there is a positional hierarchy. That should be your focus.

I am too stupid to know the positional hierarchy. I just find myself in positons that I have heard Paul talk about and try to maintain them or move to another more interesting one that suits my fancy.
