This is unfortunately a common occurrence in Bujinkan training, especially the groundfighting. "Act like I just poked you in the eye" and **** like that.

I feel like playing devils advocate here.

There's only a few techniques that I see fit to some extent to practice in a LARPing fashion...at least for beginners. For example a wristlock technique may involve an RBSD scenario where one grabs the arm/wrist and goes to slug your face in, so you strike to the face with your free hand (perhaps using teh d34dly on the eyes) while simultaneously striking to the leg with your opposing foot, and then dropping into a wristlock with both hands.

What I just described is a modified Kempo technique, and if one were to practice it at beginner levels I wouldn't exactly want them cracking each other in the jaw full force to get the effect in a truly "alive" situation. Though I would recommend that if one were to teach such a technique that they should move up to using protective gear on the head to train it with more and more resistance while incorporating counters to the hundreds of ways that technique could go wrong instead of just "talking" about it, like most Ke?po guys do.

Basically, what you're saying is that they should wear protection and start hitting eachother for real.

The only compliance allowed is the tapout.

Except for the protective gear. Yes.

There's nothing wrong with using protective gear, as long as you realize it's still one extra layer of protection you won't have in a real fight.

I wear a cup for BJJ because I don't want my nuts squashed. I don't care how manly you are, you get your nuts crushed. I won't base my open guard on holding my opponent's knee in my crotch or anything, I realize it's still there and protect my groin anyways.. I know guys who wear mouthguards and earguards so they don't lose teeth or get cauliflower ears. It's training smart.

That post hurt my brain (MIND CONTROL!!).
I've read that when it was just posted and I'm still not sure whether he was worshipping great mind controlling ninja master or whether he was subtly taking the piss (it only works in the dojo with Bujinkan students etc. etc. Not exactly helpful when you're accosted in "Teh str33t".).

React "as if" he were really hit...
I'm crying now, crying for all the non-contact ninja.

Most ninja train full-contact, they just aren't allowed to move.
