Kung fu used to be t3h r34l?

The topic comes up now and then that kung-fu training used to be full-contact competions, sparring and so on, but this tradition was lost or watered down into forms, disaster stances and other rubbish we tend to associate with kung-fu. I would like to know what the evidence is for this position. Are there historical accounts that can verify that this is true? What sources lend support to this view?

Forms and stances are not watered down from anything. They are part of the art.

So what your question is, I'm guessing, is: Were there full contact kung fu competitions in the "old days"?

If that is your question, the answer is "Yes, there were"

The last one was in 1933 in Nanking called the Kua Shu Elimination Tournament. Then the communist takeover, Japanese invaders, WWII came into play, and that was that.

We need a more specific question Virus. Yes, forms in certain locals have been watered down, hence Modern Wushu.

I'd argue Omega and Asia prove this point. Before you say something that is biased by supposed culture, do a little reserch.

Decent kung fu is still full contact. I don't think much has changed apart from commercialisation.

Ummm Kano's Judo was invented in 1889. Therefore Judo for the win makes no sense form a 18th century (1700s) solider.

There was a few Classical Jujutsu schools in Japan that been using the term Judo since the 1600s. But that more like Classical Jujutsu then Modern Judo.

    Virus,

Considering the Chinese had a pretty decent empire for a long while, they had to of had some good fighting systems. If the same systems are still taught or are they still effective, I don't know. But the fact the Chinese Empire existed for the time it did implies there was some real Kung Fu (Kung Fu meaning a Chinese MA).
