Wow... I was wondering why this thread was 40 pages. I thought to myself: "Hmmm... traditional Sikh martial arts, sounds interesting, but not 40 pages interesting, it must have been a really fascinating subject of discussion!" Then I read the thread. And I wept.

yeah... read the first post, sounded interesting, and then.. a forum member who i usually think of as being fairly level headed starts showing his true colours. sad really.

do i think less of someone because they are a racist? yes. i think it takes a particular type of person to be a racist, and generally those kind of people have a fairly clouded view of the world either because they are ignorant or because they are hateful.

and besides what else do i have to judge WP on? its not like ive met him irl.

why, because he apologised for making a racist remark? its an empty apology. if he didnt mean it he wouldnt have said it to begin with. although i find his opinions on the traditions of other cultures fairly distasteful as well, but considering his original statement im not as surprised as i would be otherwise.

I don't actually particularly give a **** that WP has a bias of this kind. i think most people are racist to a certain degree, mainly through their upbringing. ive had a somewhat unusual upbringing in that respect (an irish/english kid raised in a maori/polynesian area in the antipodes) which means i occasionally say things that make your average white american put their hand to their mouth while uttering "well i never!" in a shocked voice. this is a self comforting device used by those who are racist in an attempt to convince themselves they aren't sooo bad.

I mean i can give the tired old rhetoric about cultural difference, poverty and so on but who gives a ****. the turban is a sign of terror to western people propogated by the media. it provides us with a solid and easy description of the enemy that solidifes our respective nations. every nation needs something to rally against, whether they are arabs, or from the other side of the fence, white america. the fact that a middle eastern persons greeting to this site was an incredibly ignorant and racist remark is more a sign of the times than anything else.
