When people ask me about the funny TIGHT clothing cyclists wear, I tell them "You try wearing clothing NOT made specifically for cycling, and pedalling a bike for 4 hours. Call me the next day, and tell me how your skin feels."

Cycling clothing, if one is doing frequent long rides, serves the same kind of purpose as gear does in MA. Its protection against injury.
