    Swiming

I am working on an injured knee and i haven't been able to work out in about two weeks, which is driving me up the wall. I'm thinking about startiong to do some swiming today so i can get some working out and not put much stress on the knee.

Do any of you know about how many arm strokes is a mile in a pool.

Certainly depends on the speed at which you swim. Measure pool length, if you feel that you have to count miles.

A typical lap pool is 25 yards. Do the math.

Being a recreational swimmer, I'd also add that doing the breast stroke kick actually bothers my knee. Might wanna stick to the crawl.

YES! - listen to Kein Haar - I have some undiagnosed knee injury at the moment. I thought swimming would be a good no-impact workout, but I did 1 breast-stroke kick and F-d my **** up.

I'm not saying avoid swimming, but for reference, my knee injury acts up with lateral motion (not like a soccer kick), and the breast stroke was no good for me.

Good luck with your recovery - hope it's speedy.

Swimming is good for injuries. Just don't do the Breaststroke. A mile is a lot farther than you think and isn't the same as running.

Try sidestroke to start. Use easy motions and don't worry about speed.

Not if he wants a workout. Sidestroke is more of a resting position.

Are you looking for a replacement for exercise or just movement?

Any stroke (including sidestroke) is a workout if you do it long enough.

I used to swim in highschool, and I thought i might add that i had knew a friend that tore his acl playing football and decided to swim on the team the next year. Anyway hes completely recovered now and he feels that swimming had alot to do with it. Like the others said breaststroke can aggravate your knee, try backstroke or crawl.

Right now i'm trying to find something to replace, doing cardio on my feet is getting to be a real pain in the ass. I have screws in one ankle and now one knee is hurt. So, i have to try and do my cardio without putting to much stress on my lower body.
