Sport fighting by and large is rubbish for street defence because most street attacks are just beatings, often involving a weapon. People who carry out such attacks regularly (criminals) are naturally going to get good at selecting victims. Awareness and experience is much more important than kickboxing or bjj in such a situation, especially when it is low level. If you get to the stage of actually fighting a person in the street (lol) then you have failed big time.

I'm sorry, but that's absolutely wrong. I've seen over a dozen fights in my life, some of them resulting in a severe beating by striking and head stomping, and out of them, only three involved weapons.

None of these confrontations were robberies, but scuffles that got out of hand in 1) clubs, 2) gyms, and once at a home depot store after a hurricane. The only criminal act I've seen was a butched rape attempt. Everything else has been normal people doing incredibly stupid ****. You don't necessarily have to be criminal or inherently evil to do severly stupid, evil ****. The notion that most violent confrontations involve criminals with weapons is ludicrous.

Secondly, this argument that sport fighting is rubbish for street defense is just rubbish. Yeah, the str33t is not the ring, but sport fighting is just the venue by which martial artists acquire, test and refine their martial skills. A punch is a punch, a throw is a throw, a choke is a choke, footwork is footwork, physical conditioning and aggression are physical conditioning and aggressions, independently of whether they manifest themselves in a violent confrontation or a match.

The best way to approach bjj and MMA for the hobbyist is as a fun activity and sport that might help keep you fit. If you are really good you might get to fight in comps. Why is that not enough? It is laughable to argue "effectiveness" of a method for the average hanger-on who doesn't fight ever. It is much healthier to learn something because you enjoy doing so, not because in your mind you secretly want to be a "badass"; it's childish.

You are making a good point, but you are forgetting that most MA hobbyists decide to do MA as a hobby and as a way to be fit because it is an MA that they are doing. They didn't chose to do Tae Bo or Salsa-aerobics. They chose to do an MA to acquire tangible MA skills as a venue to be fit and have fun. It is irrelevant whether the hobbyist take MA lessons 2, 3, 4 or more times a week. What's relevant to this hobbyist is that tangible MA skills are being imparted in the classes he/she attends. A fun activity and sport that might help you keep fit is not enough.
