Man, that fight scene would hold up now- they'd just add some quick cuts to spruce it up. It's better that it is continous shots, so you can see it's really Cagney.

It's not the first time I see older movies with better fights then recent movies. At least they look more real!

The stunt choreographer wasn't listed in the credits (typical of '40s movies) but John Halloran, an LA cop who also appeared in the movie as "Oshima", was Cagney's judo instructor. It's a pretty good bet that he was involved in the fight choreography.

One reason why early movie fight seem more real is that back in the day, actors and stuntmen were more inclined to just go for it. The art of using camera angles to mask missed strikes, etc. wasn't fully developed until the '70s and studios were generally more casual about safety, liability and insurance issues, etc.
