Guess Where I saw WestWind Students today?

I went to my local IPSC club to practice for tomorrows pistol match. Bay one of the practical pistol area was reserved for a private class. So I walk up and say hi.

"So, taking a defensive pistol class?"

"Ya, were a private group"

"Oh really, who organized this"

"We're from a martial arts school called, West Wind"

"No ****, the west wind in berkeley?" "Yes, thats us"

"Right on, good luck with the class."

That's funny. Good on them for learning an effective way to defend themselves.

Dunno. A basic 1 day practical pistol class probably 150. I'll ask bill, he might know.

How much instruction do you get for that 150? That seems steep.

actually 150 for a day of high quality instruction is a pretty normal price. Considering that this instructor provided all 30 students with 1911's, holsters, mags, pouches, and ammo, I bet the class cost a lot more than that.

150 including ammo is a great deal. $150 with all equipment provided is fantastic.

I was speculating as to whether West Wind negotiated a group deal, then charged their students enough to turn a healthy profit. But I suppose they're making their money on the students already.

Still, if they're learning pistols from qualified IPSC instructors, they're learning something useful and practical. I wonder if they showed him how to hold a suspect at gunpoint? (One one foot with pistol held up next to your ear!)

I'm sure it costs the students double, you can believe that.

I just threw 150 out, I have no idea. In fact no one at the IPSC club was affiliated with the class. They simply rented it and brought in their own instructor.

The instructor was this "Scott Flint" fellow:

Scott Flint, a 5th degree Black Belt, holds the title of Master Instructor, has taught over 3500 students during 27 years. Has learned from experience exactly what women, men, and children must know to be safe in all environments.

Scott is also Senior Chief Instructor of West-Wind Kung-Fu Schools in California. He is Director of the Taipei Chinese Kung-Fu Association United States Of America Branch.

Besides traditional Kung-Fu, Scott teaches a course in Personal Protection using the Combat Pistol

Evidently he's big **** over at west wind.

One of the IPSC guys, a master class shooter went over and checked the class out. The guy was using state of the art methodology... from the mid-1970's. Very Very Jeff Cooper/ Chuck Taylor. "this is the weaver stance", "this is plan A, this is plan B" "color code system of awareness". The class was only 3 hours also. Frankly I don't know how much one instructor can teach 20 complete novices in 3 hours except this is the barrel, this is the trigger, etc.
