My brother did that and ended up with a terrible corneal infection.

Soft contacts are fine while training. DON'T GET HARD CONTACTS!

I can't wear contacts. Putting them in my eyes gives me eye infections. We found this out after my eye doctor put contacts in my eyes and told me to come back in 4 hours. I came back in two hours in horrible pain. My eyes just can't handle it. We tried a few more times (and once more with a different eye doctor just in case) I havn't been able to wear contacts.

My vison is very poor. I can just make out if a person is making a fist when they are almost within striking range of me. Further out people are just blobs. I can strike and grapple just fine (Although striking took me a while to get used to judging distance without my glasses). In fact in BJJ situations (aka no striking) I frequently close my eyes while sparing. I do this in judo as well in standup. I actually found this works out better because I tend to think I have their balance when I really dont when i'm looking at them. With my eyes closed I can feel their balance give way. I dont however recomend closing your eyes in a MMA situation.

I get the wear once and throw away contacts, it bears repeating that you will want to chuck anything that comes out onto the mats.

Never had one come out yet, but I also learned to wrestle without 'em, and I have -8 in one eye and -9 in the other.

You can do it either way, assuming the instruction is appropriate for it. If you have to stand back to see techniques, use contacts. I just bring a spare pair and my glasses in case they both get smoked.

I'm also a newish white belt, so maybe I haven't been properly eye-raked yet or something...

    Sure is!

And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

I've gotten a couple infections and even bled from my tear duct once. I don't recommend it, but its what I do.
