BJJ- why, because we had a black belt in Judo, and former high school wrestler, who said, if he could do it all again, he would have just done BJJ. Plus, he had to get his neck fused from all the throws that had screwed up his verterbrae. Now, I've retired from BJJ- arthiritis, but if you have to choose, that's the way to go. Just my 2 cents, whichis all it's worth.

As had been said before, if you can do both do both. I am lucky enough to live in proximity to a BJJ black belt and Judo black belt, both of whom are very understanding and are actually encouraging about doing both (the BJJ black belt is also a Judo black belt and the Judo black belt is doing BJJ on the side, not sure what rank). If its either or, BJJ is great if you don't want to get thrown around (i.e. an old injury you don't want to re-injure) and Judo is great if you want to toss people, but not be entirely ground focused.

My point was that all that slamming may take a toll on you, whereas, you can roll for a long time. Now, if you have a super strong core and neck, than slam and be slammed.

meh, we have a couple of older guys who've been playing judo all their lives; they're just fine. I wouldn't say that either of them are "super strong," they've just got good ukemi.

Judo is potentially more dangerous than BJJ, but it's not like your spine's going to shoot out of your ass the first time someone catches you with a seoi nage.

you can roll 100% everyday and be allright if you have a smart training partner. getting slammed really sucks. if that's the big concern, bjj is a better choice i suppose.

a judo place will show you SOME groundwork and a bjj place will show you SOME standup. either is a good choice and that's why you should do both (if its possible, both financially and timewise) and decide from there.

i know im not contributing much to the discussion here but the site keeps telling me i haven't posted in a while so i'm appeasing the bullshido gods.

Wait a sec this actually happened to me!

I was thrown in sieonage and my spine shot right out my ass!

Just kidding! IF you find a judo school that is focused on competition you'll have a good art, otherwise go BJJ.

I would say try both! see what you enjoy more. They both are valuable for self defense in my opinion (this is someone who once did TKD though). Maybe you can find an MMA gym which teaches a mix? Even some standup as well.
