    Judo or BJJ

    Hi all,

I have come to a cross-roads in my training. I am 25 and want to learn a new martial art for the following reasons:

    a - I want to improve my self-defense
b - I want to do a martial art that doesn't attract meat heads
c - I want my training to focus on conditioning equally with technique
d - I want to have fun whilst training effectively

I am interested in Judo because of what i have read and seen of Kimura and Yoshida. However, I am also interested in BJJ after seeing the gracies in action.

Could people who do Judo and/or BJJ give me some advice here please?

Depends on where you live and what the quality of instruction in your area is. This requires your individual research and applying what you want with the quality of the practicioners at the schools you visit.

If there is still a debate, watch videos and figure out how you want to train and how you want to fight.

If you still can't make up your mind, martial arts isn't for you because you're too stupid to think for yourself.

I am planning on going to a few different Judo and BJJ schools for a trial lesson at the moment.

Do both mate. Judo will give you good standup wrestling skills and emphasises holding a dominant top position. BJJ will give you excellent ground skills. Both are great fun.

Try both and see what interests you more. If you're looking for something with more of an emphasis on standing grappling and throws, go with judo. If you're looking for more ground grappling go with BJJ.

A lot will depend on the particular BJJ and judo clubs as well as each one has a different training methodology and focus. Go in and talk with the instructors to make sure you're on board with what they're doing before you make a decision.

Do both. Will make you a very well-rounded gi grappler. I wish I'd done more judo as a kid. Maybe then I'd be able to win the takedown in BJJ more often.

I'm becoming more inclined to that approach the more I think about it. Do both, perhaps get good at Judo, and then switch to BJJ... it all depends what you like. You'll have to try both... even if you go with one exclusively, you will be achieve most of your goals...

    ... maybe except this one.

You are going to find meat heads everywhere you go. The goal is not to avoid punks or stupid people in general (unless you decide to live under a rock), but in dealing with them in an intelligent and effective manner ;) Much more often than not all it takes to deal with them is just to pretend to be deaf and blind ;)

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris
