I do MMA sparing now and then with the gi on. Personally I think it would be the same as without gi, You dont spend a lot of time grip fighting when someone is punching you in the face.

Now am I not saying that this is MMA with a gi as the rules regarding ground time and striking are too limited. But sport Jiu Jitsu addresses some of the MMA gi issues and illustrates the different types of throws and take downs available when wearing the gi.

I think you see them alot except 3. And the reason for that has to be that the people knocking BJJ haven't been anywhere near an actual BJJ class.

if i recall correctly, in the first Silva vs Yoshida fight, Silva grabbed Yoshidas gi with his left hand and kicked him the the face with his right foot

I always hated gis and other uniforms, but I hate not wearing a shirt, *but* full contact in a t-shirt looks lame. Oh well:-)

MMA with gi = sport jiujitsu. I'm not sure that the style isn't exclusive to Europe, though, and the level of contact is lower than actual MMA matches and the rules differ somewhat.
