How would you be able to work on your own?

If your gym or school or studio or dojo or whatever the hell you call it closes is your training over?

With kata as your text book you can work on movement on your own. Not forever, but it beats the hell out of running and lifting weights. It makes you practice movements you use in fighting.

I don't see my students everyday, but most of them do train everyday. And kata makes them think and come up with ideas. Sometimes they are wrong, but at least it keeps them working.

Kata training has been around a long, long assed time, and it will be around long after all of us are dirt.

I see long single person kata and long two person kata a waste. They just split into individual techniques. Those are how our kata is basically done. Block attack, hit them and throw or lock.

However, I never been in an art that does long kata, so it might have it uses. I just couldn't tell you.

Very sensible arguement. However, I just drill, when I don't have a partner.

Also, Rhamma, would you prevent yourself doing something in a way that works, but is contrary to the kata of your style?

The difference for BJJ, boxing etc. 'kata' is that there's no expectation of homogenaity or exact transmission. If Jonny Blackbelt wants to teach a move in some crazy different way no one will tell him he's insulted the spirits of his forbears.

This whole debate is stupid. People are going to do what they want, and train how they want. If you don't like it *yawn* I don't care. I imagine many of you don't actualy train anyway.

I need to go do some katas now :karated:

You can keep up your keyboard training while I'm gone. lol

In bjj passing the guard in a set (pre-determined) way, done slowly to learn the new technique, without resistance, is the equivalent of kata. The only difference is in the name. You cannot learn such basics by immediately trying to use them in sparring. First you have to become familiar with the body movement in a resistance free environment.

The pre-determined nature of the moves does not change, there are set ways that techniques are taught. These are "idealised" in the same way that other MA katas are. Improvisation comes later once basic idealised techniques have been learned and then applied in free rolling.

So long as you move on to drilling first with predetermined resistance and then free rolling and trying to use the technique there is no problem. Kata is only bad if it is used as the only training method. This does not stop kata from being essential and used in all modern sport MA. Just because they don't call it kata does not change the fact that it is.

Your only issue here seems to be with semantics and the technical approaches favoured by certain martial arts. I agree that certain MA have much better overall approaches than others and so end up being more effective.

If low resistance reps and kata are the same thing why do Judo and Karate have different words for them?
