Rhamma, if Kata is a technique catalogue doesn't that make it obsolete now that we have photographs, glossy books by Royler and DVDs?

Of couse not. Is performing Americana the same as looking at a Gracie book?

Only Chance thinks that the Gracies are teaching kata when they do walk-through familiarisation drills.

Kick Catcher this is Bunkai. Bunkai is not really two person kata.

That's not Bunkai, that's part of a really long choreographed two person kata.

Sure why don't you just sit in your recliner and watch DVDs and read books and see how good a fighter you become.

It is a matter of muscle memory, and moving is the only way to instill that.

If you have a catalogue of techniques on a DVD and you want to work from that then yes no problem. I don't learn that way. I learn by doing, and it is cool when you realize what a movement you have been doing means, and how to apply it.

If you don't want to learn that way fine don't, but don't crap on people who do, some of them can kick your ass.
People often tell me that I fail to see the gravity of the situation.
I see the gravity, and I say...

Step right up folks and watch me defy gravity!

But why not teach the moves individually? Why string them together in a big long sequence?

And I'm not crapping on anyone, just asking questions.

Without commenting on the value of kata, this is a fallacious argument. Just because someone is good, doesn't make their point of view necessarily correct.

There are people who practice no-touch knockouts and cultivate chi. Just because a few of them just so happen to be able to fight in addition does not make it less silly.

Pointy, there's not much point making such sensible points. He is only justifying the silly practices within his art to himself. He know's you are right.

Honestly, it depends on the Ryu. The Ryu-ha I study have very short kata. AKA 1 attack, 1 quick defense and you are done. I disagree with long telegraphed kata, but thats just me.
