like Phrost said, the best way to improve punches is to punch, all kinds of different ways.

Just some key points I stress for developing good functional speed:
Relax the mind and the breath is correct. When the breath is correct, the body is truly relaxed. None of this is possible if you foster specific intent.
Finding your sound is the most important step to finding your power.
Speed is useless if it lacks proper timing.
