If not wing chun... then what?

Hi all,

I am a total nubee who has been thinking of taking up a martial art for some time. Having read around on the net, I had more or less decided to try Win Chung - it looks less "flowery" and more practical than other forms of kung fu, it seems to have a logic I can understand (not over-reaching, simultaneous defense and attack) and, as I am mainly interested from a self-defense perspective, I liked what I read about its attempt to end a fight quickly. All that having been said, I came here to see if anyone had good or bad things to say about a local instructor Gary Payne (Milton Keynes)...

Having got here, though, the overiding feeling seems to be that Wing Chun is a waste of time... Have I got the wrong impression? Having looked at other posts here, I see bad things about Aikido, Hapkido, Tae Kwan Do and many more... Is everyone here a praitioner of BJJ and/or MT?

If anyone can give some objective advice to a total nube, that would be great. I am looking for a better than average chance in a real fight, rather than belts and tophies...

Do Wing Chun its the greatest Martial Art ever. If you need some grappling, do Aikido.

No not a troll - and I have been searching your forums.

As I said, I came here to look up that guy and, SEARCHING wing chun, found a lot of negative criticism. Of the many posts returned and read in my search, there seemed to be a lot of people slagging of WC without saying exactly what was so bad about it (other than various lineages).

My apologies if I offended you all. I assure you it was not my intention and that I had used your search function and read your FAQ.

People that do Wing Chun, by and large, cannot fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Is that helpful?
